सर्वप्रथम साल 1962 में जेसीआर लिकलिडर ने एक नेटवर्क तैयार किया था। वह चाहते थे कि यह नेटवर्क एक ऐसा जाल हो जिससे आंकड़े और सूचनाएं भेजी जा सकें। 1966 में डारपा ने आरपानेट के रूप में नेटवर्क बनाया। यह नेटवर्क चार स्थानों से जुड़ा था। बाद में इसमें भी कई परिवर्तन हुए और 1972 में बाँब काँहन ने अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय अभिकलित्र संचार सम्मेलन ने पहला सजीव प्रदर्शन किया।
